As a middle class American, it’s been difficult for me to understand how we are supposed to make a living when there are so many things working against us. How can we go on day after day with the rising cost of food, fuel, utilities, car insurance, taxes and health care, while dealing with the insecurity of unemployment? In the past, whenever I considered these things, I felt a hopeless sense of impending doom in the pit of my stomach. There is so much talk about how to solve these issues, but nothing ever seems to stop the downward spiral of struggle and stress that millions of folks are experiencing.

Like many working people, my life went along fine during the 1980s. I had a good paying job ($42,000 a year) and though I didn’t enjoy the kind of work I was doing as an industrial draftsman, receiving a steady paycheck every week kept me going without much complaint. But then came the Gulf War in the 1990s and after that point I faced nine layoffs over the span of 10 years. By the time September 11 happened, I hadn’t been able to maintain steady employment in the petrochemical industry for over a decade. I would work about three or four months, then back again to the unemployment line.

It was at this point that I realized that something was wrong. The life strategy I had grown up to believe in was no longer working and there didn’t seem to be any answers. Obviously no one was going to get me out of this, so I decided I needed to take matters into my own hands and figure out a way to redefine my basic approach to living.

Vaccinations are modern medicine’s most-favored form of quackery. Even while the bulk of the evidence shows vaccines and flu shots ultimately harm more people than they help, they continue to be pushed by doctors, drug companies and state health authorities. Now you can add pediatricians to that list.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, a group of drug-pushing doctors that claim to care for children, is now demanding that parents get their children injected with an annual flu shot vaccine — even for six-month-old babies! According to the new AAP guidelines, all children from six months to eighteen years old should receive an annual flu shot vaccine injection even though flu shots have been scientifically shown to be effective on only about one percent of those receiving them!

But here’s the most disturbing part: The AAP is now aggressively attacking anyone who suggests flu shot vaccines should be spaced apart or skipped altogether in order to reduce the vaccine burden on a child.

A report by Toronto Public Health advises children to limit their use of cell phones as much as possible, citing studies that have linked long-term mobile phone exposure to an increased risk of brain tumors.

“We think it’s responsible to limit children’s exposure,” the researchers wrote.

“While scientists were pretty dismissive of any risk years ago, with the accumulation of studies, it appears people who have been using their phones for a long period of time are at greater risk of certain kinds of brain tumors.” said report co-author Loren Vanderlinden.

Toronto Public Health recommends that children use land lines whenever possible, using mobile phones only for “essential purposes.” When cell phones are used, the report urges children to keep calls shorter than 10 minutes and to use headsets or other hands-free devices as much as possible. Limiting cellular phone use is especially important for pre-adolescents, the authors said.

Students should be allowed to take brain-boosting drugs such as Ritalin, a leading academic has claimed.

Professor John Harris said that the drugs should be made available over-the-counter for study purposes.

Currently ‘cognition-enhancing drugs’ such as Ritalin require a prescription but the government should ’seriously consider’ a change, according to Professor Harris, the director of the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation at the University of Manchester.

The move would provoke intense debate. There are fears about the safety of the medications and claims that such drugs are already overused.

Latest figures showed that GPs wrote more than 535,000 prescriptions for antihyperactivity drugs in 2007  -  more than 10,000 a week. The figure has doubled since 2002.

Critics have accused doctors of using such medications as a ‘chemical cosh’ to calm thousands of youngsters who are boisterous and unable to concentrate at school.

But Professor Harris claimed that a sizeable body of evidence showed that stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Provigil  -  described by U.S. students as ‘Viagra for the brain’  -  significantly improve concentration and academic performance.

He told the Times Higher Education magazine that their side-effects were not excessive.

‘It would make sense to try to maximise their benefits,’ he added.

It is regarded as an oasis of calm and tranquility, and the nation’s capital for alternative health therapies and spiritual healing remedies.

But now the residents of Glastonbury, which has long been a favoured destination for pilgrims, are at the centre of a bitter row in which many blame the town’s new wireless computer network - known as wi-fi - for a spate of health problems.

Some healers even hold that electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) generated by the wi-fi system are responsible for upsetting positive energy fields of the body, which are known as chakras, and positive energy fields of the earth, which are known as ley lines.

There are now calls for the project, the first of its kind in Britain, to be “unplugged” and for wi-fi masts in the centre of the Somerset market town to be removed just seven months into its experimental run.

Meanwhile soothsayers, astrologers and other opponents of the wi-fi system have resorted to an alternative technology - known as “orgone” - to combat the alleged negative effects of the high-tech system.

In May, Glastonbury - which has a population of 9,000 and which lends its name to the country’s largest rock festival, staged on a farm six miles outside the town - became the first place in the country to have a free wi-fi network installed in its town centre. The £34,000 project is financed by county council and regional development agency funding,

At a public meeting to discuss alleged health problems in the Somerset town, residents complained of numerous symptoms including headaches, dizziness, rashes and even pneumonia.

Protesters claim that radiation associated with the wi-fi network suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone which helps to control sleep patterns, regulates the body’s metabolic rate and boosts the immune system.

New research shows that the low-cost vitamin Thiamine (vitamin B1) reverses kidney damage in diabetics, restoring the ability of the kidneys to function without allowing proteins to spill over into the urine.

The finding proves that a very low-cost treatment is highly effective and could serve as a low-cost nutritional therapy for diabetics, ultimately saving tens of millions of dollars a year in medical treatment costs in the U.S. alone.

The research was conducted at Warwick University in the UK. Predictably, the UK version of the American Diabetes Association (called “Diabetes UK”) took the new evidence as an opportunity to tell people to avoid nutritional therapies. As reported by the BBC, Dr. Iain Frame said, “We would like to stress that it’s still too early to come to any firm conclusions about the role of vitamin B1 and we would not advise that people look to vitamin supplements to reduce their risk of kidney complications at this stage.”

In other words, it’s the same advice diabetics get in the United States: Don’t you dare use vitamins to enhance and protect your health… use pharmaceuticals instead!

A teacher who won £250,000 compensation after a pupil tried to strangle him has criticised a ‘can’t touch’ culture in schools after other staff initially refused to intervene.

Colin Adams, 50, was attacked by a 12- year- old boy, who knocked him to the floor before punching and kicking him, and grabbing his neck. But despite other teachers yelling at the boy to stop, no one stepped in to help.

Mr Adams’s ordeal ended only after another teacher eventually came to his aid by forcing the boy’s thumbs back to release his hold. Later, the unnamed teacher admitted to Mr Adams that he was afraid the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, would accuse him of assault.

Hundreds of children who suffered neglect or abuse at the hands of their parents have been given the green light to sue councils for damages that could total millions of pounds.

Between 200 and 300 cases where councils failed to take children promptly into care are being prepared after a landmark legal ruling, The Times has learnt. The delays in removing children stretch from weeks and months to years in some cases.

This month the Court of Appeal upheld a ruling that Doncaster council must pay compensation to a man who suffered 12 years of abuse by his parents.

The case established for the first time that local authorities are liable for abuse suffered by children if they fail to remove them from harm. The ruling could force hundreds of councils to settle similar claims.

A 12-year-old schoolgirl has been left paralysed from the waist down by a mystery illness that came on 30 minutes after she was given the new anticervical cancer jab.

Ashleigh Cave suffered dizziness and headaches soon after the vaccination at her school and then deteriorated rapidly, collapsing several times over the following days.

A week later she was admitted to hospital after losing all strength in her legs and, two months on, there has been no improvement.

Her mother Cheryl, 37, from Aintree, Merseyside, is blaming her daughter’s condition on the human papillomavirus (HPV) jab, which was introduced in Britain in September as part of a government-funded vaccination programme.

All girls aged 12 and 13 are being offered vaccinations with Cervarix, a drug that stimulates the body to defend itself against HPV, to protect against the later onset of cervical cancer which is linked to the virus.

In America, where an immunisation programme using a similar product, Gardasil, began more than a year earlier, there have been dozens of serious “adverse events” reported in which a link to the vaccinations is suspected.

They included 30 deaths in addition to cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, an auto-immune disease that can cause paralysis. The American authorities have said, however, that there is no evidence the HPV jabs caused these reactions.

‘A U.S. health centre has sparked outrage by offering Christmas gift certificates that can be used to pay for an abortion. The Planned Parenthood clinic says the gift cards can be used for  “services”  or the recipient’s choice of “birth control method”. The chain of clinics offer a variety of health services, including birth control and terminations. The gift certificates, which can be used at almost 100 clinics in the state of  Indiana, are being made available at their walk in centres and from a website.’

For the first time, the FDA has issued a warning that the mercury contained in silver dental fillings may pose neurological risks to children and pregnant women.

“Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses,” reads a statement that has been added to the agency’s Web site. “Pregnant women and persons who may have a health condition that makes them more sensitive to mercury exposure, including individuals with existing high levels of mercury bioburden, should not avoid seeking dental care, but should discuss options with their health practitioner.”

The warning was one of the conditions that the FDA agreed to in settling a lawsuit filed by several consumer health groups.

“Gone, gone, gone are all of FDA’s claims that no science exists that amalgam is unsafe,” said Charles Brown, a lawyer for Consumers for Dental Choice, one of the plaintiffs.

“It’s a watershed moment,” said Michael Bender of the Mercury Policy Project, another plaintiff.

Mercury is a well-known neurotoxin that can cause cognitive and developmental problems, especially in fetuses and children. It can also cause brain and kidney damage in adults.

The results of two new surveys published in the medical journal Pediatrics reveal that many U.S. doctors are abandoning vaccines that don’t make them money. Due to low reimbursements from insurance companies and government health care programs (Medicare, Medicaid), many doctors are simply refusing to offer such vaccines to children. About half of the doctors surveyed said they had delayed buying at least one vaccine due to the cost.

These survey results bring several important issues to the surface. First, there’s the greed of Big Pharma: If the drug industry is here to serve humankind (as they hilariously claim in their advertisements), then drug companies should make vaccines available at cost rather than at the huge markups on the drugs they have in place right now. And that’s only if you believe vaccines are actually good for children in the first place.

The second fascinating issue here is that doctors are increasingly fed up with the monopoly price fixing of Big Pharma, too, and they’re not going to keep offering services at a loss just because the drug companies tell them to. As long as the pharmaceutical industry continues to exploit the population for obscene corporate profits, more and more doctors are going to drop vaccine services that don’t earn them some cash. Doctors are in business to make money, too, and they’re not willing to keep eating losses just to vaccinate children (and we shouldn’t expect them to).

 Science has conceded the error: More than one lab has in fact shown that cell phone radiation can cause DNA breaks. Back in August, reporter Gretchen Vogel claimed that Hugo Rüdiger at the University of Vienna medical school was the only one (see September 3, below). Now, Vogel allows that a team from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, had previously observed DNA breaks in cells exposed to GSM radiation.

In a letter published in the magazine’s November 28 issue, Vini Khurana, a neurosurgeon in Canberra, Australia, advises that, “[T]here are many other peer-reviewed papers from laboratories in at least seven countries, including the United States, showing that cell phone or similar low-intensity EMFs can break DNA or modulate it structurally.” (Others have submitted similar complaints to the magazine’s editors.) In her response, Vogel writes, “My intention was not to imply that there were only two papers showing any effects of EMFs. There are many publications that show effects of EMFs on DNA, but the citations listed [by Khurana] do not directly contradict the quoted sentence.” That sentence which leads her August 29 article begins: “The only two peer-reviewed scientific papers showing that [EMFs] from cell phones can cause DNA breakage…” In an exchange with Microwave News, Vogel drew a sharp distinction between DNA “damage” and “breakage,” which, she said, allowed her to exclude many other papers, particularly one by John Aitken.

Vaccination teams are to move into schools amid fears of a measles outbreak that could affect up to 100,000 children across the country.

Thousands of children are being offered the MMR vaccine after the number of cases of measles recorded this year reached more than 1,000 for the first time in more than a decade.

Doctors fear that the illness could sweep through the country if children and young teenagers are not vaccinated as a matter of urgency.

The number of cases in England and Wales reached 1,049 cases by October - almost ten times the number recorded in 1996, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said today. The figure for the whole of last year was 990.

Mary Ramsay, an immunisation expert at the agency, attributed the rise to the relatively low take-up of the combined jab for measles, mumps and rubella.

About two thirds of the cases this year have occurred in London, but health officials in the North West are so concerned about local outbreaks that they are beginning an emergency vaccination programme. They have written to the parents of 10,534 children in Cheshire identified by their records as having missed the MMR vaccination.

Across England, one child in four has not received the suggested two doses of MMR, leaving take-up significantly below the level required to prevent an epidemic. It is estimated that a large outbreak could affect 30,000 to 100,000 children across the country.

When I was a child, ‘pester power’ meant stamping one’s feet in a shop. It involved little more than begging one’s mum in an irritating voice for the latest He-Man figure or for one of those unusually thick pink milkshakes from a place called McDonald’s.

It was a feeble force, this alleged power of the pest, easily quashed by a clip around the lughole or by that most ominous threat issued by mums-in-distress: ‘Just you wait until your dad gets home.’

How times have changed. Today, ‘pester power’ is a powerful political tool.

New Labour is explicitly recruiting children to its climate change and respect agendas  -  its illiberal, conformist, thought-policing programmes of ‘good behaviour’ promotion  -  in the hope that they might, ‘use their pester power in a positive way: reminding grown-ups how to behave’.

After coating Britain in CCTV cameras, the Government is nurturing a battalion of child spies, an army of ethically minded Veruca Salts, to harry and hector the badly behaved adults of 21st-century Britain.

‘Ministers are drawing up plans for genetically-modified crops to be grown in secret and more secure locations to prevent trials being wrecked by saboteurs. They may ask the police to target opponents of GM crops in the way that they have cracked down on animal rights protesters. Another option is for the controversial crops to be grown at a secure government site such as Porton Down near Salisbury, which carries out military research and includes a science park where they could be securely developed away from the public.’

A woman who has fought for seven years to control use of pesticides on farmland near private houses is celebrating a landmark legal victory.

A High Court judge ruled yesterday that Georgina Downs, who lives in the countryside outside Chichester, West Sussex, had produced “solid evidence” that residents had suffered harm from the chemicals.

Mr Justice Collins said that the Government had failed to comply with its obligations under a European directive to protect rural residents and communities from possible harmful exposure to toxic substances during crop spraying. He called on Hilary Benn, the Environment Secretary, to review current controls on use of sprays and the way they are assessed in terms of risk to human health.

Ms Downs, who was aged 11 when she first became exposed to pesticide spraying and began to suffer flu-like symptoms, sore throats and blistering, was delighted with the ruling on “one of the biggest public health scandals of our time”. She called on Gordon Brown to intervene and block any appeal.

‘Ministers want to double the number of girls using contraceptive jabs and implants to cut down on teenage abortions.

 Under reforms, youngsters considered at risk of unplanned pregnancies will be advised by their GPs to use these methods of contraception, which could render them infertile for three years.

 In addition, abortion clinics will be required to offer immediate contraceptive advice to women after their pregnancies have been terminated. Those who decline to take the advice will be recalled and asked to consider having implants or injections.’

Advocates Call for Immediate Ban of All GM Foods and GM Crops.

A long-term feeding study commissioned by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety, managed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth, and carried out by Veterinary University Vienna, confirms genetically modified (GM) corn seriously affects reproductive health in mice. Non-GMO advocates, who have warned about this infertility link along with other health risks, now seek an immediate ban of all GM foods and GM crops to protect the health of humankind and the fertility of women around the world.

Feeding mice with genetically modified corn developed by the US-based Monsanto Corporation led to lower fertility and body weight, according to the study conducted by the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna. Lead author of the study Professor Zentek said, there was a direct link between the decrease in fertility and the GM diet, and that mice fed with non-GE corn reproduced more efficiently.

Israel went back on a pledge to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip on Thursday, turning away critical deliveries of fuel and food at the borders for the seventh consecutive day.

In reneging on its pledge, Israel blocked delivery of United Nations food aid intended for 750,000 Palestinians.

Gaza was plunged into darkness as the territory’s only power plant shut down at 6:00pm local time due to a lack of fuel. Just before dark, Palestinans went into the streets in a frantic search for candles and bread.

As night fell, sirens sounded accross the Gaza Strip in protest of the closure.

Earlier in the day, 20 European consuls who planned to visit Gaza were turned away at the Erez border crossing. Aid workers were also denied entry to the Strip and medical patients were prevented from entering Israel for treatment.

John Ging, the director of UN operations in Gaza, warned of an impending “humanitarian disaster” if Israel continues to bar food and other supplies from the territory.

“We cannot describe the situation in the Gaza Strip except as a terrible and terrifying one. There are 750,000 refugees who depend on what we offer them in food supplies. Israel is preventing us from distributing these supplies,” he told Ma’an.
